Abstract:
The objective of the study was to evaluate associations among animal performance and methane emission traits under feedlot conditions and in respiration chambers in Angus cattle bred to vary in residual feed intake (RFI), which is a measure of feed efficiency. Fifty-nine cattle were tested for feedlot RFI, of which 41 had methane production recorded on an ad libitum grain-based ration in the feedlot, 59 on a restricted grain-based ration in respiration chambers, and 57 on a restricted roughage ration in respiration chambers. The cattle became older and heavier as they went through the different phases of the experiment, but their feed intake (expressed as DMI) and daily emission of enteric methane (methane production rate; MPR) did not increase proportionally, as feed offered was restricted in the respiration chamber tests. Methane emissions by individual animals relative to their DMI were calculated as methane yield (MY; MPR/DMI) and as 2 measures of residual methane production (RMP and RMP), which were calculated as the difference between measured MPR and that predicted from feed intake by 2 different equations. Within each test regime, MPR was positively correlated ( = 0.28 to 0.61) with DMI. Phenotypic correlations for MY, RMP, and RMP between the feedlot test and the restricted grain test ( = 0.40 to 0.43) and between the restricted grain test and the restricted roughage test were moderate ( = 0.36 to 0.41) and moderate to strong between the feedlot test and the restricted roughage test ( = 0.54 to 0.58). These results indicate that the rankings of animals for methane production relative to feed consumed are relatively stable over the 3 test phases. Feedlot feed conversion ratio and RFI were not correlated with MPR in the feedlot test and grain-based chamber test but were negatively correlated with MPR in the chamber roughage test ( = -0.31 and -0.37). Both were negatively correlated with MY and RMP in the feedlot test ( = -0.42 to -0.54) and subsequent chamber roughage test ( = -0.27 to -0.49). Midparent estimated breeding values for RFI tended to be negatively correlated with MY and RMP in the feedlot test ( = -0.27 and -0.27) and were negatively correlated with MY, RMP, and RMP in the chamber roughage test ( = -0.33 to -0.36). These results showed that in young growing cattle, lower RFI was associated with higher MY, RMP, and RMP but had no significant association with MPR. MenosAbstract:

El objetivo de este trabajo, fue el de obtener y evaluar pasturas seguras de larvas de parásitos gastrointestinales de los ovinos, como un método de control más sustentable, que permite minimizar el uso de antihelmínticos y por lo tanto disminuir los costos de sanidad y contribuir a retardar la aparición de la resistencia
antihelmintica. Los experimentos se realizaron durante los años 1995 y 1997 en la Unidad Experimental Glencoe de INIA Tacuarembó, con pasturas naturales sobre una mezcla de suelos superficiales y profundos de Basalto. Para la obtención de las pasturas seguras de larvas de parásitos gastrointestinales de ovinos, se utilizaron métodos alternativos: un pastoreo previo con bovinos adultos (novillos) de 3 meses (octubre a diciembre); 2 meses (noviembre a diciembre) y 2 meses (octubre a noviembre) y 1 de descanso (diciembre). La parcela control infectada de larvas de parásitos gastrointestinales de ovinos, fue una en la que se realizó un pastoreo previo con capones durante los meses de octubre a diciembre. 60 corderos de la raza Corriedale destetados en el mes de diciembre, fueron identificados y sorteados según su peso vivo al azar, y se distribuyeron en 4 grupos de 15 cada uno. El área que ocupó cada tratamiento fue de 1.5 ha. Dichos corderos fueron desparasitados con una toma supresiva de ivermectina oral y pasaron a los tratamientos donde permanecieron en pastoreo continuo desde principio de enero a fines de mayo (1996 y 1997). La evolución de la infestación parasitaria de los corderos se evaluó cada 14 días, a través del conteo de huevos de parásitos gastrointestinales en las materias fecales (H.P.G) por la técnica de McMaster modificada. Para su análisis estadístico, los valores de H.P.G. fueron normalizados mediante raíz cúbica. La evolución del peso vivo, se realizó mediante pesadas cada 14 días. Los resultados de los 2 años de experimentación mostraron que los corderos que pastorearon en parcelas donde
hubo pastoreo previo con bovinos, tuvieron cargas de HPG más bajas que aquellos que pastorearon la parcela pastoreada previamente con capones. Por lo tanto, dichos grupos necesitaron el 50% menos de dosificaciones (2 en el año 1996 y 1 en el año 1997) que el grupo de la parcela control infectada (4 en el año 1996 y 2 en el año 1997). En cuanto a los diferentes tiempos de pastoreo previo con bovinos, el pastoreo previo continuo de 3 meses con bovinos, mostró diferencias altamente significativas y superior (P = 0.001) a favor de este tratamiento con respecto a los demás. En cuanto a la evolución del peso vivo de los animales, no hubo diferencias significativas entre los grupos de pasturas seguras y pasturas contaminadas de larvas de parásitos gastrointestinales. De estos resultados obtenidos en 2 años de experimentación, y con las variantes debidas al efecto que ejerce el clima sobre la disponibilidad de las pasturas y la carga parasitaria, se considera que es posible disminuir la carga parasitaria mediante el uso de pastoreo previo con categorías adultas de bovinos, para el uso de categorías ovinas más susceptibles, como es el caso de los corderos de destete y las ovejas de cría.
